benefits of nutsTo eat nuts or not to eat nuts that is the question. Nuts have become controversial in recent years. The health benefits of nuts usually gets weighed against the perceived risks of gaining weight.

The November 21, 2013 edition of The New England Journal of Medicine published a large observational study of 119,000 men and women. You might want to consider the results the next time you visit the grocery store.

The study revealed that people who eat a handful of nuts daily were 20% less likely to die from any cause over a 30 year period than those who passed on eating nuts.

That’s great news but that’s not all these researchers discovered.

The nut-eaters were more slender than those who didn’t eat nuts. This news might help alleviate your fears of eating nuts due to their high fat content.

Also studied was nuts protective effect on specific causes of death. The most striking benefit was a reduction of 29% in the major cause of death, heart disease. Additionally, there was protection from cancer.

So what kind of nuts should we eat?

Apparently all nuts are beneficial. This even includes peanuts as well as the “tree” nuts such as almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, and others.

This was really good news to me because I eat walnuts and almonds daily. I also eat peanut butter.
